The likes of Elvis Presley, Mary J. Blige, Bon Jovi, Vicki Carr, Johnny Cash, Enrique Iglesias, the Jackson Five, Alicia Keys, Selena, Barry Manilow, Reba McEntire, Diana Ross and Shania Twain are only a few of the international artists that have performed at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo since it first began 76 years ago.

Billed as the richest regular-season rodeo in the world, Rodeo Houston brings in more than $344 million in positive economic impact to the city each year. It also draws thousands of visitors from across the globe.

On average, the 20-day celebration attracts more than 2,000 international visitors from more than 50 countries to the city, each year. Playing a role in rounding up these visitors for the rodeo is the Houston Airport System (HAS).

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo attracts guests of all demographics,” confirms Joel Cowley, executive director of agricultural exhibits for the Houston Rodeo. “There are special days that celebrate Houston’s Hispanic heritage – Go Tejano Day – and the contributions of black pioneers to the cultural achievement and heritage of Houston and Texas – Black Heritage Day.”

George Bush Intercontinental and William P. Hobby airports – HAS’ two commercial airports – provide access to the city from more than 115 domestic and close to 70 international destinations.

Last year, more than 7.5 million international travelers passed through George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

“As we do with all of the other major events we host, the airports in Houston focus on ensuring travelers can get through our terminals when they arrive and when they are ready to leave, without any problems,” explains Jesus Saenz, customer service manager for the Houston Airport System. “We let our employees know what major events are taking place in the city and prepare them for some of the questions our passengers may have.”

Houston plays host to a wide array of events that include the annual Offshore Technology Conference, the International Quilt Festival, the Essence Music Festival and the National Football League’s Superbowl.

Wild, Wild, West. The Houston Rodeo is one of the city's most celebrated traditions.

The Houston Rodeo employs nearly 19,000 volunteers annually and last year attracted more than 1.8 million attendees.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has lots to offer,” says Cowley. “There’s fun for the family, all at an affordable price. There is the world’s largest livestock show, shopping and dining. It is an event like no other.”

Part of the revenue generated from the rodeo is used for local scholarships and other educational support. Since 1957, more than $120 million have been donated to this cause by the Houston Rodeo.

This year, rodeo time will run from March 3rd through the 22nd, at the Reliant Stadium, and the artists scheduled to perform include Hanna Montana, John Legend, Faith Hill and Fergie, among many others.
