The Houston Airport System (HAS) recently partnered up with the Houston Audubon Society to unveil a new art exhibit at William P. Hobby Airport. Faces of Flight, the photographic work of Ted Lee Eubanks Jr., features birds such as the Black-billed Cuckoo, the Brown Thrasher, the Hooded Warbler and the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in unusually close focus.

“It’s not often that birds and airports compliment each other, though we do maintain a wetlands mitigation area to help preserve native birdlife,” says HAS Director Rick Vacar. “This exhibit also represents flight at its most basic and we can all appreciate the beauty in that.”

At the unveiling of this unique exhibit, earlier this week, attendees such as Annise Parker, City of Houston Controller, Joe Turner, director of the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Gina Donovan, executive director of the Houston Audubon Society, were on hand to celebrate Eubank’s work.

The Houston Audubon Society is a 38-year old organization with a mission to promote the conservation and appreciation of birds and wildlife habitat.

“The Houston Audubon Society is proud to be a Faces of Flight exhibit sponsor,” says Donovan, “We want Houston residents and visitors to appreciate the great diversity of birds found in the Houston area and to understand Houston’s unique location in the crossroads of several migratory flyways.”

Eubanks is not only the exhibit’s sole artist; he is also a naturalist, experiential tourism consultant and the lead author of, “Birds of Houston, Galveston, and the Upper Texas Coast.”

The Faces of Flight collection, located inside the secure area of Hobby Airport’s Central Concourse, features 43 photographs of area birds, mounted on a unique foundation designed to look like the wings of an aircraft by airport system employees.

“Faces of flight is an exhibition of birds faces and these birds are indigenous birds to this area as well as East Texas,” says Pam Ingersoll, art coordinator for the Houston Airport System. “You will not believe how beautiful these birds are and how colorful they are I guess we don’t just stop enough to look and see the great beauty that’s here.”

The exhibit will be on display until February of next year and is part of HAS’ airport beautification efforts, which are meant to enhance the traveler’s environment and highlight local arts and culture. HAS maintains a substantial permanent art collection and is also planning several temporary exhibits during the next year. Faces of Flight is the first of these temporary exhibits.
