Massages, pedicures, manicures, facials and most anything else you would find at your average spa are now available at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). Inaugurated this month, the new XpresSpa at Terminal D is the latest addition to the growing list of airport amenities at IAH.
Ensuring customer satisfaction with a positive airport experience is the ultimate goal, say airport authorities. In fact, since almost a decade ago the Houston Airport System (HAS) has embarked on an ambitious campaign to bring the best and most diverse set of amenities to Houston’s airports.
Some have likened the new airport environment to a shopping mall experience.
“XpresSpa is truly like the last piece of the puzzle for us. For years we have had upscale shopping and dining options available at our airports; we’ve had some beauty and facial services available, but we had never had a full spa within the airport environment,” says Randy Goodman, concessions operations manager for the Houston Airport System.
XpresSpa is a nationally owned company that operates exclusively at airports around the country. The beauty and relaxation business is designed to encourage passengers to enjoy the total spa experience while traveling through airports. Services include sinus and stress relief, back and shoulder massage, the full body massage, manicures, pedicures, massages, and facials.
In Houston, the fact that IAH is a major gateway to Latin America made the airport a must open location for the XpresSpa chain. The chain joined The Paradies Shops, a major concessions operator at HAS, in order to bring their variety of offerings to Houston travelers.
IAH offers more weekly flights and serves the highest number of Mexican destinations of any airport in the United States.
“On one hand, our clients have very busy everyday schedules juggling careers and families. Many do not have the time to take care of themselves as much as they would like to. On the other hand, air travel leads to significant periods of waiting time at airports,” says Jennifer Shufro, vice president of publicity and airline relations for XpresSpa. “XpresSpa takes the proverbial lemon and turns it into lemonade by giving our busy clients an opportunity to use their waiting time in a healthy gratifying way.” |
